What six love means
Six love is the whitewash. One side reaches six while the other is still on nothing, love, and the beating carries a weight nothing else in the game does. It is the reason people play to six rather than to a bigger number, and the reason a single answering point feels like a rescue.
Love means zero
Love is zero, the same borrowed sense used in tennis. A side on love has not scored in the game at all.
Six love therefore means six to nothing: the maximum result, with no reply.
Breaking the run
The moment the trailing side scores a single point, the six love is off. The game continues to six as normal, but the whitewash cannot be recovered in that game.
This is why a losing side plays for one point with everything they have, and why the leading side blocks rather than chases a big finish.
Six is the ceiling
No result carries past six. A hand worth more than the points remaining, a Derby for instance, still only takes the score to six and no further.
The social part
A six love is remembered. It is announced, it is repeated, and it is generally the first thing said when the same four sit down again. That is the point of the game as much as the arithmetic.
